A CSA gives consumers the option of sponsoring a farm’s harvest. This new supportive farming approach has been around since I was born, however many are still not aware of its existence. I, myself, did not discover it until about 5 years ago.

In a CSA, keyword being community, the growers and consumers provide mutual support in the production of food. Many farms would have an extremely difficult time covering costs of the farm operation without CSA members. Members are often referred to as “share-holders,” and typically pay upfront before the season begins. Although, many farms allow payment plans. Commitment to a CSA truly builds a more local agricultural system for your community. What’s another benefit? Well, I did forget to mention members receive the freshest produce a on a weekly basis. So, if you want to partner with a farm this year and receive more delicious and nutrient dense foods all season long, check out www.SEMAPonline.org to find a CSA near you.

I was inspired by this paragraph from the book, Farms of Tomorrow:

“Since our existence is primarily dependent on farming, we cannot entrust this essential activity solely to the farming population–just 2% of Americans. As farming becomes more and more remote from the life of the average person, it becomes less and less able to provide us with clean, healthy, lifegiving food or a clean, healthy, lifegiving environment. A small minority of farmers, laden with debt and overburdened with responsibility, cannot possibly meet the needs of all the people. More and more people are coming to recognize this, and they are becoming ready to share agricultural responsibilities with the active farmers.” (1)

Osteoporosis affects millions of Americans every year. There are many lifestyle practices that can increase the chance of bone thinning including cigarette smoking, drinking too much alcohol, consuming an inadequate amount of calcium, and physical inactivity. If you’re under 30, you should be depositing a great deal of calcium in your bank (body) now. If you’re over 30, you should be doing everything you can to preserve what you’ve already saved up for.

Tips for building and keeping strong bones:

Increase your Beans and leafy greens – Kale, Brussels, Swiss Chard, Collards

Join a Local Farm CSA to get more nutrients from your produce.

Cut back on salt. Salt causes more calcium to be lost in the urine.

Limit coffee to not more than 2 cups per day.

Get the majority of your protein from vegetable sources.

Get plenty of calcium and vitamin D. You may need to add a calcium supplement. Let DLN evaluate your diet.

Establish regular exercise into your daily routine.

Weight-bearing exercises – Yoga, Jogging, Nature walking, & Zumba

After receiving many phone calls, emails and texts regarding the recent appearance of SUGAR on 60 minutes a couple weeks ago, I decided it needed to be posted for awareness purposes. Sugar is sweet, but is it “sweet” to our body, organs, and mind?

The Facts:

The average American consumes more than 130 pounds of sugar annually

Sugar = Low energy levels, More Cravings, Immune suppression and now HIGH CHOLESTEROL, HEART DISEASE & CANCER!!!!

Sugar made 60 Minutes last Sunday and representing sugar as a toxin was Dr. Lustig. One topic I really enjoyed hearing someone else mention stated, “Dr. Lustig’s theory is that we used to get our fructose mostly in small amounts of fruit — which came loaded with fiber that slows absorption and consumption — after all, who can eat 10 oranges at a time? But as sugar and high fructose corn syrup became cheaper to refine and produce, we started gorging on them.” Many of my clients, including myself, have challenges balancing their sugar intake. Fiber plays such a huge role in slowing our digestion and balancing the sugar in our blood, without it we end up setting ourselves up for failure.

BOTTOM LINE FROM 60 MINUTES: New research coming out of some of America’s most respected institutions is starting to find that sugar, the way many people are eating it today, is a toxin and could be a driving force behind some of this country’s leading killers, including heart disease.

This vegetable is rich in B6, iron, vitamin C, vitamin K and calcium. It also supports your detoxification system. Varieties include, curly, ornamental, or dinosaur. In just one cup of kale is only 36 calories and 5 grams of fiber, which makes it a smart addition to any meal. The best thing about kale is that it is available year round in New England.

This week, I was asked where to buy grass-fed beef by clients and readers. In my search, there weren’t many locations to choose from, however they can be found. More and more grass-fed meats are showing up and you can make a difference. Ask your local grocery store to carry grass-fed beef from local sources.

1. Lawton’s Family Farm – Foxboro
2. U.S. Wellness Meats- Deliver
3. Jordan Farm- South Dartmouth
4. John Crow Farm Products – Groton
5. Whole Foods – Hingham
6. River Rock Farm – Westport
7. Hardwick Beef – Deliver & Harvest Co-op Markets
8. High Meadows Farm – Hubbardston

Why grass-fed??

Lower in Fat. The graph below shows grass-fed beef can have the same amount of fat as skinless chicken breast[1]

Lower in calories. Fat has 9 calories per gram, compared with only 4 calories for protein and carbohydrates, so as an example, a 6-ounce steak from a grass-fed cow can have 100 fewer calories. You could actually save 17,733 calories a year. HOLY COW!

One farmer along our Organic Farms are Everywhere trip shared the idea of having kale at breakfast, which is now my favorite breakfasts of all time. Kale is available year round, even in New England. It is definitely a vegetable to consider planting in your garden this year. The experience of walking outside in the winter months, picking a few kale leaves and adding them to your eggs on a Sunday morning is priceless. We should all eat more kale, which was a personal message from another farmer along our travels. However, she was actually quoting the Defiant Dude, James Lantz, the creator of the t-shirts that states, “Eat More Kale.” His project is on Kickstarter.com.
